A Collector’s Residence in Gramercy Park
This private residence in New York’s Gramercy Park was designed for a young family of art collectors with a passion for contemporary design and historic character. The project sought to preserve the architectural integrity of the early townhouse while creating a dynamic environment that reflects the clients’ eclectic sensibility.
Original features such as the ornate plasterwork and grand proportions were carefully restored, serving as a refined backdrop for a diverse mix of eras and influences. The interiors layer modern interventions with classic references, balancing precision with warmth. A palette of rich textures and deep tones anchors the rooms, allowing the art and furniture to take centre stage.
The scheme brings together a curated selection of pieces from Jean-Michel Frank, Aldo Tura, Jindřich Halabala, and Billy Baldwin, alongside striking works by Anselm Reyle, Tomás Saraceno, and Julian Schnabel. Throughout, the dialogue between past and present is deliberate and playful: mirrored surfaces meet patinated brass, sleek black cabinetry contrasts with hand-finished plaster, and sculptural lighting punctuates the classical envelope.
The result is a home that feels both timeless and personal — a reflection of its owners’ curiosity and confidence, and of the enduring charm of Gramercy Park.
